Dear Burnham Families,
We hope this letter finds you well and excited about the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th. We would like to inform you that there was an error in the previous communication regarding the timing of the eclipse. Here near Chicago, we won't be able to see the eclipse in totality, but there is still a silver lining as the partial eclipse will be visible for a while longer.
The corrected timing for the partial eclipse on April 8th is as follows:
Start Time: Approximately 12:51 p.m.
Maximum Obscuration: Around 2:06 p.m.
End Time: Approximately 3:22 p.m.
This means that you and your children will have approximately 150 minutes of viewing time to witness this celestial event. We would like our students to view the event during the maximum obscuration.
For safety reasons, it's crucial to emphasize that viewing the eclipse without proper eye protection is unsafe, especially for areas outside the path of totality. To ensure the safety of our students, we have purchased approved eclipse glasses for the entire school. These glasses will allow students to safely observe the eclipse without risking eye damage.
However, if you prefer that your child does not participate in viewing the eclipse, please fill out the Google form below. Be aware that student will be dismissed from school at 2:50 pm. All students, including those who have opted out, will receive a pair of eclipse glasses for their safety.
We also wanted to share an exciting bit of information: the next total eclipse after April's won't occur for another 20 years, specifically on August 23, 2044. This makes the upcoming eclipse an incredible opportunity for students to witness a rare astronomical event.
